At what age should my child first see an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a check-up by about age 7. Most children won't need braces that early, but a quick look lets us spot developing bite or jaw issues while they're easiest to guide.

Do I need a referral from my dentist?

No. Many of our patients are referred by their family dentist, but you're welcome to call and schedule a complimentary exam on your own.

How long will treatment take?

Every smile is different. Most comprehensive treatment takes somewhere between 12 and 30 months, and we'll give you a personal estimate at your consultation.

How often will I have appointments?

Once your braces or aligners are in place, most patients visit every 6 to 10 weeks for adjustments and progress checks.

Do braces hurt?

Teeth may feel tender for a few days after braces go on and after some adjustments. Soft foods and an over-the-counter pain reliever usually take care of it. Day-to-day, braces shouldn't be painful.

Can I play sports or a musical instrument?

Yes. Wear a mouthguard for contact sports – we can recommend one that fits over braces. Wind instrument players typically adjust within a week or two.

Should I keep seeing my regular dentist?

Absolutely. Continue cleanings and check-ups every six months (or as your dentist recommends) throughout treatment.

Am I too old for braces?

No. Healthy teeth can be moved at any age, and many of our patients are adults. See Adult Treatment.
