Retention

Home / Treatment

When your braces come off or you finish your last aligner, the retention phase begins. It's just as important as active treatment. Without retainers, teeth naturally tend to drift back toward their old positions.

Types of retainers

  • Removable clear retainers: thin plastic trays that look similar to aligners.
  • Hawley retainers: a durable acrylic and wire design that can be adjusted.
  • Bonded (fixed) retainers: a thin wire attached behind the front teeth.

How long to wear them

Most patients wear removable retainers full-time at first, then transition to nighttime wear. Plan on nighttime wear long-term to protect your results.

Caring for your retainer

  • Keep it in its case whenever it's not in your mouth – many retainers are lost in napkins.
  • Clean it with cool water and a soft brush. Keep it away from heat and pets.
  • Bring it to every appointment.
